Instructional Design

Overview

It is important for students starting out in college to understand how to identify, evaluate, and ethically use appropriate information to ensure academic success. With an abundance of information available online, many students turn to the internet as their first stop when conducting research, even though the information that they find there may not come from a reliable source. Through information literacy instruction, students can learn how to evaluate content that they find during the research process for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose to determine if the information is appropriate for academic use. The purpose of this instruction is to improve student performance by teaching information literacy concepts, and how to apply those concepts to coursework and assignments. The target audience for this project is community college students enrolled in a first year experience course. The instruction will be delivered online. The reason for this choice is that there are many sections of this class which run, but only one librarian on campus. The librarian is not able to deliver face-to-face instruction in all of the sections of the course. In order to ensure that all students receive the same instruction, creating an online module that can be completed asynchronously seems to be the best option.
